Privacy & safety
Pocket Tutor is built for learners, including children, so it collects as little as possible.
What we collect
- No account, password, email address, school or date of birth is required or requested. You choose a nickname, which can be anything you like — it does not have to be your real name.
- No advertising, no third-party trackers, no selling or sharing of data.
Kept on this device
These live in this browser's storage on this device only:
- Your nickname, grade and subject choices.
- Past papers you paste or upload, and the questions extracted from them.
- Your current tutor lesson, the working you type during it, and saved simulations.
- A copy of your progress, mastery, streak and attempt history.
- Accessibility and reading preferences.
Kept on our servers
So that your progress is not lost, the app also keeps a minimum amount of study data on our servers, linked to an anonymous learner identifier created by the app rather than to a real identity:
- Your learner profile: nickname, grade and chosen subjects.
- Your progress and mastery per topic.
- Your practice and tutor attempts: subject, topic, skill and whether you got it right.
- Your streak and study-day count.
- A count of how many AI requests you have made each day, so daily limits can be applied.
Your past papers, uploaded files and tutor conversations are not stored on our servers.
AI processing
AI runs only when you explicitly ask for it — for example by asking the tutor, generating practice, or pressing “Process paper”. When you do, the following is sent to our AI provider so an answer can be produced:
- The question text you typed, spoke, photographed or selected from a paper.
- The working or answer you typed, when you provide it.
- Your grade, subject and the curriculum topic, plus your mastery level for that topic.
- Page images of a scanned paper, only when you press “Process paper” on a scan or photo. A PDF that already contains text is read entirely on your device with no AI call at all.
Your nickname is never sent to the AI provider. We do not keep the photos or PDFs you upload — they are read in passing to produce the transcription and are not saved by us. What the AI provider does with a request is governed by that provider's own terms and privacy practices, not by us.
Permissions & your data
Camera
Not known in this browserUsed only when you tap “Snap the question”. The photo is sent once so the question can be read, then discarded. You can block the camera in your browser settings and still use the app by typing or uploading.
Microphone
Not known in this browserUsed only while you are speaking a question. Your speech is turned into text by your browser or device, shown to you to edit, and no recording is kept by us.
Uploaded images
Not stored by usAn uploaded or captured photo is sent to the AI tutoring provider to read the question and is not stored on our servers or used to train models.
Conversations
This browser onlyYour lesson and the working you type stay in this browser while you are using it. The conversation itself is not stored on our servers. “Clear conversation” on the Tutor page removes it immediately.
AI processing
Only when you ask for itWe send the question, any working you typed, your grade and subject, and the curriculum topic. We never send your nickname, school or contact details.
Data retention
Device, plus minimal study data on our serversSaved simulations, your own past papers and accessibility settings live in this browser only. Your profile, progress, attempts and streak are also kept on our servers under an anonymous learner identifier so your progress survives a refresh. The buttons below delete both copies.
Camera and microphone permissions are controlled by your browser, not by this app. Use your browser's site settings to change them at any time.
Deleting your data
The buttons above delete data both on this device and on our servers:
- “Delete progress & attempt history” removes your progress, mastery, streak and attempts here and on our servers.
- “Delete my name, grade & subjects” removes your learner profile here and on our servers.
- “Delete my saved past papers” removes the papers stored on this device.
Limitations worth knowing: the daily AI-usage counts used to enforce the free daily limits are kept for a short period and are not removed by these buttons, because they exist to stop abuse rather than to describe you. Once a request has been sent to the AI provider, we cannot delete it on that provider's side. Routine server logs may briefly hold technical request information.
This page describes how the app currently works, in plain language. It is a technical description rather than a completed legal notice, and a full privacy and compliance review is still to come.
Staying safe
- Never type your full name, ID number, address or contact details into the tutor.
- Only photograph the question itself, not people, notebooks with your name, or ID cards.
- AI can make mistakes. Always check important answers with your teacher or textbook, and use Pocket Tutor to learn the method rather than to copy answers.
